France passes new law to ban smartphones in schools


“We know today that there is a phenomenon of screen addiction, the phenomenon of bad mobile phone use,” states the Education Minister of France.

Smartphones, Smartwatches and Tablets are banned in schools of France. Students upto 15 years of age must keep their smart devices switched off during school hours. The law will be applicable from September, this year.

France passes new law to ban smartphones in schoolsAccording to the statement of Education Minister Jean-Michel Blanquer, the ban is a matter of public health because children are not playing during breaks anymore. His recent tweet states that the law had passed with only one vote against it. He said to the French News Channel BFMTV that the law was designed to “protect children and adolescents”. “Thank you to all parliamentarians for this progress for our schools,” Mr Blanquer said.

Schools have the independence to make exceptions to this law considering specific teaching requirements or other educational purposes.
