A convenient wheelchair was the innovative design that, according to the designers, “has the potential to reduce the pain and inconvenience of a lot many suffering people in India.”

“Young design engineers have the ability to develop tangible technologies that can change lives. The James Dyson Award rewards those who have the persistence and tenacity to develop their ideas.”

The James Dyson Award

It is an international design award that celebrates, encourages and inspires the next generation of design engineers to design something that solves a problem.

Introducing SAMARTH, Amit Kumar and Rituparna Guha shared with Brainfeed, the journey of creating a new-age-wheelchair:

  1. Please state the features of ‘Samarth’

Samarth, helps in shifting wheelchair users from wheelchair to any other medium e.g. bed, car and vice versa in an easy, safe and convenient way. Also, it drastically reduces the efforts of care giver in handling of patient, especially during transfer.

  1. How did the idea of ‘Samarth’ erupt?

On interacting with individuals at the Cheshire Home for Disability, we learnt that there is lack of an effective solution which could efficiently shift patients to and from wheelchairs. After our user study, we discussed our findings with our mentors for this project – Professor PVM Rao and Tigmanshu Bhatnagar.

  1. How did you apply the steps of Design Thinking?

Design thinking leads you in a structured way. User centered design was the main keyword in our mind during the process. We followed Stanford bio-design process which involves steps – Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype and Test.

  1. How was your experience in The International Design Competition?

In one word, it was “Awesome”. The announcement boosted our confidence to a great extent. The satisfaction when one’s work gets recognized is an amazing feeling but what was even more fulfilling was the response we got. We have received many mails from people and companies as well, enquiring on the availability of the product which strengthens our belief in Samarth. What we started as a project had taken a platform and now it is our duty to facilitate it to every person who needs this.
