Tamil Nadu government released a draft of preschool syllabus, proposing to extend the school hours for pre-kindergarten children till 4 pm. According to the draft, students will be permitted to take nap post-lunch in the afternoon.
State Council for Educational Research and Training (SCERT), released the draft asserting to change the current schedule which ends by 1 pm. The draft proposes to plan activities after the afternoon nap ends.
Some feedbacks from parents and educators include opposition on increasing school hours of such young children as it would detrimental to their health, while parents from nuclear families expressed their support to the state proposal.
“Though the draft syllabus prescribes various play-based activities, the child should ideally run around or play in the open instead of sitting in classrooms,” states President of Tamil Nadu Students’ Parents Welfare Association, S Arumainathan.
Reportedly, a child rights’ activist, Andrew Sesuraj, says in a media statement, “The move would help working parents focus better on their work, but having a fixed schedule, frequent switchovers and a spectrum of work in the same day might not help the children in reaching the goal. Instead, it should be flexible and teachers should have the time to explore their creativity.”
