107 Chandigarh schools introduce “Balvatikas”

“Balvatikas” have been introduced in 107 Chandigarh schools as a new addition to the K-12 ladder. Punjab governor and Union Territory administrator Banwarilal Purohit inaugurated them virtually on Monday, starting with Kishangarh’s GHMS (Government Model High School).

The “Balvatika”, or what we would commonly call “pre-primary III” or “kindergarten III”, is an intermediate standard between pre-primary and 1st standard primary. The vision of the “Balvatika” is to strengthen the foundational education of children before they move on to the primary classes. Introducing this standard before Class 1 for 6-year-old children, Chandigarh became the first state in the country to have fully implemented the NEP (National Education Policy) 2020 in all its schools.

Early childhood care and education was already implemented in all schools in the UT with pre-primary I and II. By embracing this three-tier education system, GHMS Kishangarh became the first government school in the Tricity of Chandigarh-Mohali-Panchkula to do so. Although, some private schools in the region had already implemented this policy.

According to a study by UNICEF, children with at least one year of pre-primary education are more likely to develop the critical skills required to succeed in school and are also less prone to dropping out or repeating grades.

For the “Balvatika” classes, classrooms and corridors need to be reformed along with the proper education and training of the teachers – like has been done in GHMS Kishangarh. This new extension to learning will ensure the holistic development of children between three to six years of age and will benefit them in developing their social, emotional, linguistic, analytical and communication skills.

Special workbooks have also been released by the education department for elementary classes.

The Governor was impressed with the infrastructure at GHMS Kishangarh and he directed the school authority to maintain their condition. He also added that such a pristine environment and constructive activities aid the experiential learning of children. He promised that every child in Chandigarh deserves the right to education and the authority will ensure that none of them is left behind.
