2023 Nobel Prize Winners in Chemistry Declared

by admin

The 2023 Nobel Prize in Chemistry has been awarded to three distinguished researchers – They are receiving the award for the discovery and synthesis of quantum dots. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has stated that the laureates have all been pioneers in the exploration of the nanoworld.

Previously in early 1980, Louis Brus and Alexei Ekimov had independently created quantum dots, that are nanoparticles really tiny that only quantum effects determine their characteristics. In 1993 Moungi Bawend had transformed the methods of manufacturing quantum dots. This made their quality really high and showed way for the future where the method is a prerequisite in current nanotechnology. Quantum dots are actually nanoparticles whose size determine their properties.

The particles have unique properties and spread their light from television screens and LED lamps. The particles also catalyze chemical reactions. Their clear light illuminates tumour tissue for surgeons. Researchers feel that in the future quantum dots can contribute to flexible electronics, minuscule sensors, slimmer solar cells and perhaps encrypted quantum communication. This year the awardees will receive a sum of 11 million kronor (about USD 1 million), an 18-carat gold medal and a diploma at the Nobel Prize ceremony in December
