IIT Bombay filed 131 patents in the year 2021-22, out of which 96 were granted that amounts to a little over 73%. This is a considerable increase when compared to 23% of granted patents in the year 2016-17. There is a steady growth in the overall Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) applications, including patents, trademarks, designs, and copyright, getting granted at IIT Bombay.

The number of patents filed and granted is lesser in the year 2021-22 compared to the year 2020-2021. In the year 2020-21, the number of patents files stands at 164 out of which 120 were granted. Though the number of patents filed by IIT Bombay came down to 131 in 2021-22, the institute has maintained a success rate of over 73 per cent, with 96 patents granted. 27 patents out of 116 applications were granted, in 2016-17. Thereafter, the number of patents being granted witnessed an upward curve.

IIT Bombay has seen a spurt in the number of IPR applications from 2020-21 in comparison to the past few years. The annual Director’s Report of past three years shows a steady rise in the success rate of IPR applications being granted.
189 applications for IPR, including patent, trademark, design and copyright were filed by IIT Bombay, in 2021-22. Out of these a little over 87 per cent or 165 were granted. This was a considerable jump in the number, which had been less than 60 per cent in the past.
Out of the 153 IPR applications in 2019-20, 86 or roughly over 56 per cent were granted. Year 2020-21 saw a considerable rise in the number of total IPRs filed with 264 applications. The success rate stand at 55% with a total of 145 granted applications.
A total of 88 trademarks and 10 design IPR applications along with one copyright were filed by the institute in 2020-21. In comparison, a year before that, only 9 trademarks and 23 design IPR applications were filed.
