The Indian Institutes of Technology will be reserving seats for candidates from economically weaker sections from this year. The centre has already introduced 10% reservations for the poor from January.
IIT Roorkee and IIT Madras will implement a quota of 4%, IIT-Delhi will implement 5.6%, and IIT-Kharagpur will implement around 3% EWS quota, as reported by Hindustan Times.
“With the introduction of EWS [economically weaker sections] category in 2019, IITs are going to offer around 500 seats to EWS candidates, which is approximately [a quota of] 4%,” mentioned IIT-Roorkee Director, AK Chaturvedi to HT. “The increase in the total number of seats will be less than 9%. Thus, the total number of seats will cross 12,500.”
“This year, IIT-Delhi will be implementing 5.6% EWS quota. We will have an overall increase of 105 seats. For this, we are already constructing a girls’ and a boys’ hostel,” added Siddharth Pandey, chairperson of the JEE (Advanced) 2019 for IIT-Delhi.
