53 Year Old Tripura Woman Passes Class 10 Exam 28 Years After She Discontinued Her Studies

A Tripura woman, Shila Rani Das who is now 53 years-old, has passed madhyamik (Class 10) examinations conducted by the Tripura Board of Secondary Education (TBSE), 28 years after she discontinued her studies. She wrote the madhyamik exam along with her two daughters, Rajashree and Joyshree, who attempted the higher secondary examination (class 12).

Shila Rani appeared for the madhymik exam for the first time in 1994, while she was already a clerk in the Agartala municipality (now a corporation). She failed the exam in her first attempt and some obstacles like the death of her family members came up and could not attempt the exam anymore.

Since the death of her husband in 2011, she became the sole breadwinner of the family. So, the survival of her family became more important than her studies. Her elder daughter discontinued her studies in 2015 but continued in 2020 and passed the madhyamik in the same year along with her younger daughter.

This year the children decided to attempt the higher secondary exam together and made their mind up to make their mother write the madhyamik exam. Joyshree, the younger of the two daughters, passed with 65.6 per cent marks and Rajashree, the elder one, with 50 per cent. Their mother scored 43 per cent.
