9 school students have died by committing suicide within 48 hours after Class 11 and 12 results were declared. The Andhra Pradesh Board of Intermediate Education declared the exam results on Wednesday.
Two other students have also reportedly tried to commit suicide.
As many as 10 lakh candidates had appeared for the exam. 61% of students passed the Class 11 exams, while 72% passed the Class 12 examination.
According to reports, 17-year-old B Tarun, an intermediate first-year student hailing from Dandu Gopalapuram village, killed himself by jumping in front of a train in Srikakulam district. He was said to be distraught after he failed in most of the subjects.
In a similar case, 16-year-old A Akhilasree from Visakhapatnam district committed suicide at her residence at Trinadhapuram under Malkapuram police station limits. She was said to be upset after she failed some of the subjects of her intermediate first-year exam.
An 18-year-old student died by hanging himself at home, in the Kancharapalem locality of Visakhapatnam. He reportedly failed one of the subjects in his intermediate second year. Another 17-year-old student died similarly in Anakapalli after securing low marks in the intermediate first-year examination.
Two 17-year-old students from the Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh died by suicide after failing the Andhra Pradesh intermediate exam. A girl student killed herself by jumping into a lake, while a boy in the same district died after consuming a pesticide.
This shocking news comes at a time when the suspected suicides of 4 IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) students on various campuses have already raised a stir in the nation.
Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud had expressed his concerns in February over such instances of alleged student suicides. He said his heart goes out to the bereaved family members of the victims, and that he was wondering where our institutions are going wrong, that students are forced to take their life.
