In a session held in the Gujarat assembly on 26 February 2024, it came to light that more than 9,000 teaching positions remained vacant in government and grant-in-aid higher secondary and secondary schools in Gujarat. According to Education Minister Kuber Dindor, as of March 2023, there were 5,940 vacancies specifically in 4,146 state-run and government-aided higher secondary schools. Education Minister Dindor also revealed that as of March 2023, there were 3,260 teaching positions vacant in secondary schools, both state-run and government-aided.
Among the 3,260 vacant positions in secondary schools, 796 are in government-run schools, and 2,464 are in grant-in-aid schools. Based on the data available, Gujarat currently operates a total of 671 government-run higher secondary schools and 3,475 grant-in-aid higher secondary schools. Ahmedabad district tops the list with 581 teacher vacancies, followed by Kheda with 405, Amreli with 307, Banaskantha with 299, Surat with 283, and Sabarkantha with 229 vacancies.
In response to another query about the availability of playgrounds for school children, Education Minister Dindor disclosed that 6,206 schools of various standards, both government and private, are operational without any playgrounds.
