The storytelling method refers to an approach to convey a narrative or story. While the methods of delivering education is evolving, storytelling remains as a recognized method and it continues to be incorporated into modern educational practices. Dr. K Rama Raya, an experienced educationalist and Principal advisor at MDN Edify Education, explained about the importance of storytelling in classrooms.

Why do you think story telling method is important while teaching?

A. At the elementary level, employing this instructional approach enhances and cultivates milestones such as attention span, language proficiency, assimilation of abstract concepts, imaginative cognition, as well as critical and analytical thinking in a child. Additionally, it addresses gaps in environmental knowledge concerning entities, locations, and individuals to which the child may lack exposure. 

 

Does storytelling improve a student’s engagement and participation in the learning process?

A. Enhancement is contingent upon delivering the content in a captivating manner, employing compelling techniques, and implementing effective strategies. This approach aims to captivate students’ attention, encouraging voluntary and unconscious engagement, ultimately fostering active participation.

What strategies can be implemented in the classroom to follow storytelling method of teaching and learning?

A. Visual narratives

Theatrical improvisations and enactments

Theatrical productions

Chronological event structuring

Evaluations of story characters

Developing a continuation of a narrative

Visual representation tools

How do you assess the impact of storytelling on student learning outcomes?

A. Aligning specific learning objectives with the narrative allows for direct assessment through various strategies, including student reflections. These assessment methods may include those mentioned earlier. For milestone-driven learning outcomes, anecdotal records serve as valuable assessment tools, complemented by evidence from presentations or real-world applications of acquired knowledge and wisdom in students’ daily lives.

Can you share any personal experiences that illustrated the power of storytelling in the classrooms?

A. My grandson has notably enhanced his vocabulary, expanded his attention span, and undergone a positive shift in his approach to people and various situations. His newfound ability to think critically and question daily life occurrences reflects a significant developmental improvement.
