Education Minister Ranoj Pegu announced on Tuesday that the Assam government is set to conduct ‘Gunotsav 2024,’ a comprehensive assessment to be held in the entire state, to evaluate the performance of approximately 40 lakh students. The evaluation is scheduled to take place from January 3 to February 8. Pegu, during a press conference said that this annual assessment aims to enhance the quality of education and elevate learning outcomes. He further highlighted that the evaluation will be executed in 43,498 government schools across 35 districts of the state, encompassing a total of 39,63,542 students.
Gunotsav will involve the active participation of various stakeholders, including teachers, students, administrators, and local communities, fostering accountability among them to uphold the standards of quality education, stated the minister.
The upcoming assessment will unfold in three phases, commencing with the first round encompassing 12 districts from January 3-6, followed by 13 districts from January 9-12, and concluding with the remaining 10 districts in the final phase from February 5-8.
Minister Pegu said that the initiative aims to determine the learning gaps of each child, ensuring quality education with outcomes tailored to specific grades. Additionally, it will evaluate schools based on scholastic and co-scholastic aspects, as well as the availability and utilization of infrastructure, along with community participation. To facilitate this extensive evaluation, a total of 18,098 external evaluators will be deployed throughout Assam. Notably, these evaluators will include the chief minister, MLAs, the chief secretary, college teachers, and other relevant figures, who will visit schools as external evaluators.
Gunotsav was started in 2017, and officials have reported that four rounds of the assessment have been completed since then, involving all districts in Assam.
