The Assam government decided to introduce Meitei script in educational institutions across the State. The decision was made in a State Cabinet meeting on March 10, 2024, which was chaired by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
The State Cabinet gave approval to introduce Meitei or Manipuri Mayek script in educational institutions of Assam. According to Sarma, this move would allow interested students to study Manipuri literature and pursue higher studies in the area. He further mentioned that the decision would help students of Assam apply for jobs in Manipur, where this knowledge is a prerequisite.
The State Cabinet also decided to reserve 6 percent of total seats in the State quota across all medical colleges in Assam for the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS). For this, the medical education rules in Assam would be amended.
During the cabinet meeting, the Assam government also decided to allocate Rs 131 crore for the beautification of the historic Rang Ghar in Sivasagar. The proposed beautification project includes the development of a site at Rupohi Pathar, situated on the North Western side of Rang Ghar, covering an area of 83 bighas 2 Katha. Furthermore, the cabinet approved the draft Assam State Prosecution Service (Amendment) Rules, 2024, which entail amendments to Rule 15 and 19 of the Assam State Prosecution Service Rules, 2023.
These amendments have been aimed at ensuring the smooth and efficient conduct of proficiency-cum-skill tests for the selection of candidates through direct recruitment in various categories of posts. The proposed amendments would enable multiple boards to conduct proficiency-cum-skill tests seamlessly, considering the large number of applications received for direct recruitment in various categories of posts.
