Tell us when and why AWPO was formed.

After the Kargil war it was felt that an organization of this kind was needed to facilitate jobs to Army veterans, their widows and wards into various government/semi government and corporate sectors. It was called Army Placement Agency and was rechristened as Army Welfare Placement Organisation (AWPO) in 2010.

How many officers are placed in education sector?

The Army has 1.3 million soldiers and 60,000 retire every year. A majority of them come from agrarian backgrounds and most retire in their mid-30s and 40s. We have 17 regional offices and we place 4-5 officers every month to schools pan India. Every year 30,000 register with us seeking jobs.

There is a notion that retired officers only fit in security services. Your comments

This is not true. There are 145 skill sets available in various fields and we have 12 professional institutions including Armed Forces Medical College, Fashion Technology, Hotel Management to name a few. This apart there are 136 Army Public Schools with officers from the Army managing a few schools with aplomb.
