Balance Studies, Build Skills: PM Modi’s Advice to Students on Gaming as a Career

by Triparna Ray

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed students at Pariksha Pe Charcha 2026, offering nuanced advice on balancing academics with personal interests such as gaming. He described gaming as a serious, skill-based pursuit that demands discipline, creativity, and responsible use of technology, while cautioning against the risks of gambling linked to online games.

Responding to a student’s question on managing studies alongside gaming and judging whether one is on the right path, the Prime Minister noted that success often changes perceptions within families.

“Initially, parents may scold you for playing games. But when you achieve something—win a medal or gain recognition—the same parents begin to feel proud and support you. Your success turns into respect for your parents,” he said.

Highlighting India’s rich cultural heritage, PM Modi encouraged students to look beyond playing games and explore game development and storytelling rooted in Indian traditions. He suggested creating games inspired by stories such as the Panchatantra, Lord Hanuman’s tales, or Abhimanyu’s escape from the chakravyuh, adding that such creativity could also find a wider audience through social media platforms.

Emphasising innovation and initiative, the Prime Minister said that when young people create and share their own products, families often begin to actively participate and contribute ideas. “When families see young creators gaining followers and recognition, they too start offering suggestions and encouragement,” he observed.

Sharing what he described as his guiding mantra, PM Modi advised students to convert hobbies into meaningful outcomes. “Turn your hobbies into practical products and share them freely. Feedback leads to new ideas, and new ideas lead to success,” he said.

While reassuring students that an interest in gaming is not a drawback, the Prime Minister stressed the importance of using technology productively. He warned against gambling and the financial risks associated with certain online games, calling such practices “disastrous” and urging students to stay away from them.

Concluding his remarks, PM Modi underlined that gaming should be viewed as a skill-driven activity requiring focus, alertness, and self-awareness. “Gaming involves speed and agility and can contribute to personality development. What matters is choosing quality games and understanding where your real expertise lies,” he said.
