Beat low attention span

by admin

It is often found that children play with their stationary, fidget or look outside during a class. According experts, a child must have an attention span for 2-5 minutes on a task multiplied by their age, i.e., a 7-year old must be able to concentrate for at least 35 minutes on one task. However, the concentration levels for a task vary from student to student and it tends to ebb as the child’s school day progresses.

Here are a couple of key pointers/methods that can help elevate your child’s attention span and improves their overall performance.

Be more innovative

Parents and teachers must incorporate creativity in their daily activities. For instance, instead of asking a child to write their name on a paper, which they might find mundane, try making them write name with the building blocks. This can increase their interest in the activity, thereby improving attention span on the given task.

Time to play For

a good attention span, it is good if students take breaks and indulge themselves in outdoor physical activities like playing a sport, a quick stretching session, and also inculcating yoga sessions in their routine.

Divide tasks

Break down the bigger tasks into smaller chunks. For example, it is quite difficult for a child to study an entire lesson in one go, so to make it achievable for a child, it is good to break down the pages into smaller paragraphs. Dividing the work into pieces provide students with more focus and complete the task with refreshed mind.

Distraction-free Space

Education experts also say that a calm and clutter-free environment fosters learning and student’s productivity. It’s necessary to remove clutter and enticing objects from child’s study space to enhance their learning experience and keep them distraction-free.

Make learning fun with games

A child gets engaged quickly when learning is infused with games. For example, form small groups in classroom to play an interesting maths quiz. Each group competes against the other groups. This exercise will instil learning spirit among students and the group that completes the quiz first wins a gift. They can also play memory games like crossword puzzles to increase attention span.
