National Science Day, observed on February 28, commemorates the discovery of the Raman Effect by Indian physicist Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman and celebrates India’s scientific achievements. The theme for 2024 is ‘Indigenous Technologies for Viksit Bharat’. With the aim of raising awareness about Science Day and its significance, Brainfeed will be featuring various perspectives and insights from School Leaders.

In light of this, we are delighted to share below an article by Dr. Neeta Bali, Director – Schools, Seth Anandram Jaipuria Group of Educational Institutions.

While National Science Day in India marks the remarkable discovery of the Raman Effect on February 28th, the spirit of scientific inquiry deserves to be commemorated every single day of the year. Let’s explore how we can ignite curiosity, cultivate critical thinking, and empower the next generation of scientists, not just on one day, but every day.

Kindle the fire and stoke it frequently: Organize science fairs, debates, or Olympiads where students can showcase their experiments, inventions, and research. Collaborate with science centers or museums for interactive workshops and field trips, fostering hands-on learning and exploration…

Inspire Innovation: One can do this by  Inviting scientists, researchers, or science communicators for talks, workshops, or “Science Cafés” to create a vibrant exchange of ideas.  We can Showcase diverse science careers through career fairs or guest lectures, motivating students with possibilities beyond textbooks.

Recognize and appreciate inquiry: Design engaging classroom activities that encourage questioning, experimentation, and analysis. Integrate STEM challenges, science-themed debates, or literary explorations to make science relatable and applicable to everyday life.

Empower through Action: Organize community projects like environmental initiatives or citizen science programs, allowing students to contribute to real-world research and connect science to their communities.

Celebrate Creativity: Host science art competitions or film screenings, promoting creative expression inspired by scientific concepts. Encourage students to translate their scientific understanding into artistic forms, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation.

Critical Thinkers: A scientifically aware society can critically analyze information, make informed decisions about their health, environment, and future, and contribute to solving complex challenges.  Science equips individuals with the tools to tackle complex challenges, from climate change to resource management, fostering innovation and sustainable solutions and science-based evidence guides effective policy decisions, ensuring the well-being of citizens and the planet.

Every school must take upon itself the onus and responsibility of providing an engaging and interactive curriculum, fostering a love for these core subjects early on. As a nation, we must promote equal access to quality science education for all backgrounds, nurturing a diverse and representative scientific community that reflects the world around us.  By celebrating science throughout the year, promoting scientific awareness, and fostering the spirit of inquiry in education, we empower individuals to become informed citizens, capable problem-solvers, and responsible stewards of our planet. Let’s continue to ignite the flame of curiosity, not just on National Science Day, but every day, and work together to cultivate the next generation of scientists who will lead us towards a brighter future.
