Bommai government responds to criticisms, allocates money for shoes and socks for students

by admin

The Chief Minister (CM) of Karnataka Basavaraj Bommai finally relented to criticism and allotted funds for providing shoes and socks to over 50 lakh students enrolled in government schools. Around 132 crore rupees have been set aside for giving each student 1 pair of shoes and 2 pairs of socks. The state government is also going to provide uniforms, which already are well on their way.

This decision comes as a remedial measure after the Bommai government was criticised for delay in decision-making and not initially allotting funds for the purpose. The education minister BC Nagesh has also been criticised for his insensitivity for allegedly saying that children do not go to school for shoes socks. Opposition severely criticised the Bommai government with DK Shivakumar of the Congress party saying that he would beg and borrow if he has to, in order to raise funds for the students.

However, on Friday, Bommai told reporters that “When it comes to uniforms, the government has already given its approval; they are getting ready, and will be distributed to students after a while. Today, I have approved Rs 132 crore for shoes and socks. We will give them. There’s no need to create confusion on this.” Nagesh also took to twitter saying that “2022-23 for all students of class 1 to 10 of government schools. 132 crore has been approved by the State Government ₹ for purchase and distribution of ‘Shoes and Socks’ through School Development and Monitoring Committees (SDMC).”
