Hello Educators,
The urgent need for education addressing current issues affecting our planet has never been greater. In a rapidly changing world, where environmental threats such as climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss are now imminent, it’s imperative that early childhood education address these pressing concerns. Young people are the future stewards of our planet, it is them who will need to rise up to solve the environmental challenges we all face .
This isn’t just about equipping the next generation to handle waste better or recycle more. It’s about shaping future green leaders, innovators, social entrepreneurs, and global citizens to understand the principles of reducing our waste generation, keeping materials from entering nature, and regenerating the natural environment. These are the principles of the circular economy, which is a framework of production and consumption applied to all aspects of society and meant to shape a better, more sustainable future.
Students need learning experiences that are actionable, engaging, transformative, tactile, and hands-on. That’s where initiatives like the Waste Hero Education program play a pivotal role in shaping tomorrow’s green leaders.
Waste Hero Education is a beacon of hope in the quest for getting young people equipped with the knowledge, attitude, and skills to address these environmental challenges. This free global initiative has set an ambitious goal: to educate 1 million students by 2030 on recycling, zero waste, and building the circular economy. It’s not just another set of lessons; it’s a youth movement.
Waste Hero Education offers educators free lesson plans and resources on topics related to recycling, zero waste, and the circular economy. The lessons are designed to get youth taking action now. Each classroom lesson plan includes a classroom lecture and a class activity to give students a hands-on learning experience.
A recent survey of educators indicated that 80% of teachers want to include these topics into their classroom, however only 25% said they aren’t comfortable teaching them. Waste Hero addresses this needs gap in that each lesson includes a detailed lesson script for teachers with guiding questions and prompts for students throughout the lesson plans. The lessons don’t require any prerequisite knowledge of the subject matter as all the information to teach the lesson is included.
Waste Hero offers adaptable lesson plans that cater to different learning environments and classroom contexts. The 19 free learning modules, spanning 6 Levels across all grades, are not designed to be a prescriptive curriculum, but created for educators to adapt the lessons to support existing curricula.
All the lesson plans are available for free download on the Waste Hero Education website in both PDF and PowerPoint file formats to accommodate the different needs of classrooms globally.
The Waste Hero Education program is a call to action, inviting everyone to participate in building a future world without waste in the natural environment. As we assess the gaps in our current education system, initiatives like Waste Hero Education lead the way, underscoring the potential that lies in merging education with action for a greener and more sustainable future.
