Building an Empathetic and Philanthropic Community at Delhi Public School Bangalore South: Empowering Students for Global Citizenship

In a rapidly developing world, where the densities of academic success, mental health challenges, and social integration can feel overwhelming, the importance of cultivating a compassionate, empathetic, and responsible community of students cannot be overstated.

Delhi Public School (DPS) Bangalore South has undertaken several innovative programs that not only intend to educate but also to instill a deep sense of empathy, responsibility, and global citizenship among students.

These initiatives, including the Peer Educators Leadership Programme, student-led conferences, and concerted efforts like the FLP (Future Leaders Program), exemplify the school’s commitment to creating well-rounded, empathetic students equipped with the skills to navigate and contribute positively to the world.

Launched in November 2021, the Peer Educators Leadership Programme (PELP) was introduced by CBSE in collaboration with Expressions India.

DPS was honoured to be among the first seven schools selected to be a part of this transformative journey. The programme’s core aim is to equip students with the necessary skills to support one another, especially in crucial areas like mental health, academic achievement, and overall well-being. Through carefully selected and highly motivated student volunteers, the program has fostered a student-led network where peers act as resources for one another, offering emotional guidance and support, particularly in times of stress or mental health challenges.

This initiative’s true value lies in its ability to create a sense of community within the school. By empowering students to become mental health ambassadors, DPS has shifted away from the traditional teacher-centric support system.

Instead, students are encouraged to approach their peers for advice and support, which reduces feelings of isolation and promotes open, honest conversations about mental well-being.

The Peer Educators, who have undergone intensive training in mental health and life skills, are now well-equipped to lead awareness campaigns, host workshops, and provide day-to-day emotional support to their peers.

The Peer Educators have organized numerous impactful initiatives over the past few years, further reinforcing their role in promoting mental health awareness. Classroom activities such as the Wonder Box and the Worry Box have been set up in grades 7-12, allowing students to express their worries anonymously.

These initiatives provide students with a safe space to open up about their struggles, whether personal or academic, without the fear of judgment. Additionally, the Peer Educators have conducted awareness sessions on crucial topics such as Men’s Mental Health, Technology Addiction, Healthy Expressions of Emotions, Bullying, and the importance of Gratitude. These topics are particularly relevant to adolescents, who often face unique challenges during this stage of life.

Events like the Wellness Garden and the Mind Matters Mental Health Conclave have further solidified the school’s commitment to mental well-being. These campaigns not only focused on student awareness but also involved teachers and staff members, ensuring a holistic approach to mental health.

For instance, the Women’s Day celebrations in 2024, organized by the Peer Educators, featured fun activities such as life skills games, art, and movement sessions, creating an inclusive and engaging environment for all staff.

The Peer Educators have also engaged with various external organizations to expand the program’s reach and deepen their understanding of mental health issues. Collaborations with reputed institutions like NIMHANS and Banjara Academy have resulted in workshops and seminars that involve not only students but also parents and teachers. These workshops have helped reduce the stigma surrounding mental health issues, encouraging a more open and supportive approach to mental well-being.

The school’s participation in the Mental Health Santhe 3 saw the Peer Educators win third place in a flash mob competition, while their field trips to NIMHANS Brain Museum and a Government School have provided opportunities to impart life skills to underprivileged students, fostering a sense of empathy and social responsibility.

These experiences allow DPS students to connect with people from diverse backgrounds, learn about the brain’s role in mental health, and reflect on their responsibilities as young global citizens.

The Peer Educators Leadership Programme has done more than just create awareness about mental health. It has empowered students to take on leadership roles, build confidence, and understand the importance of communication and collaboration.

As Malvika Nambiar, a Master Peer Educator at DPS, puts it, “My journey as a Master Peer Educator has been a cornerstone in shaping my identity as a leader and a lifelong learner. I’ve had the privilege of mentoring my fellow mates, helping them navigate the pressures of academics and adolescence with guidance and understanding.”

Through organizing sessions, workshops, and discussions, Malvika and her peers have learned invaluable skills in leadership, empathy, and adaptability, which will serve them throughout their lives.

The success of this program goes beyond the immediate benefits for the Peer Educators themselves. The entire school community has seen positive changes, with students becoming more compassionate, supportive, and aware of their mental health and emotional needs.

The sense of unity and understanding created through these initiatives has fostered a positive and resilient environment, where every student feels valued and supported.

The commitment to mental health, empathy, and social responsibility at DPS does not stop within the confines of the school gates.

Through initiatives like the Peer Educators Leadership Programme and collaborative endeavors such as FLP, DPS is actively preparing its students to become responsible global citizens.

By emphasizing the importance of empathy, leadership, and social engagement, the school ensures that its students not only excel academically but also contribute to society in meaningful ways.

In a world that often feels divided, the efforts at DPS are creating a generation of young individuals who understand the importance of coming together, helping others, being grateful and kind.
