In a story of resilience and triumph, Ishika Bala, a 17-year-old student from Gundahur village in Chhattisgarh’s Kanker district, has topped the CGBSE Class 10 board exams with an outstanding score of 99.17%—despite missing her exams last year while undergoing treatment for blood cancer.
Ishika shares the top spot in the state with Naman Kumar Khuntia of Jashpur district.
Overcoming Cancer, Not Giving Up
Diagnosed with blood cancer in November 2023, Ishika spent over a year in treatment at a private hospital in Raipur and later at Balco Medical Centre in Nava Raipur. Her health forced her to skip the 2024 exams, but not her ambitions.
“I thought I might not be able to study again, but I didn’t give up. I had faith in myself,” Ishika shared, reflecting on the difficult months of treatment.
Living in PV-51, a remote village in the Naxal-affected Pakhanjore region, Ishika’s journey was anything but easy. Her father, Shankar Bala, a farmer, said the family stood firmly by her side. “She fought her illness bravely. We just encouraged her to keep studying.”
Academic Excellence and Aspirations
Now declared cancer-free, Ishika still requires regular medical check-ups, but her focus is firmly on the future. She plans to take Mathematics in Class 11, pursue engineering, and later work toward her dream of becoming an IAS officer.
“I want to serve the country and help others. Becoming an IAS officer is my goal,” she said.
A Symbol of Courage and Determination
Ishika’s story has become a beacon of hope for students across the country. From battling a life-threatening illness to topping her state board exam, her journey is a powerful reminder that determination, family support, and inner strength can defy even the most difficult odds.
She is not just a topper—she is a fighter, a dreamer, and an inspiration.
