CBSE changes the examination structure for classes 11 and 12

by

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has changed the examination structure for Classes 11 and 12 with the goal of improving students’ skills in applying concepts to real-world situations.

According to CBSE officials  beginning from the academic session 2024-25, the examination format for Classes 11 and 12 will incorporate a greater proportion of competency-based questions.

These questions will evaluate students’ capacity to utilize theoretical understanding in practical contexts, in line with the objectives outlined in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

While there are notable changes for Classes 11 and 12, CBSE has clarified that there won’t be any adjustments to the examination format for Classes 9 and 10, ensuring uniformity across various grade levels.

These modifications involve raising the proportion of competency-based questions, like multiple-choice questions (MCQs), case-based questions, and source-based integrated questions, from 40 to 50 percent.

Conversely, the percentage of constructed response questions, which include both short and long answers, has been decreased from 40 to 30 percent.

Joseph Emanuel, CBSE’s Director (Academics), affirmed the board’s dedication to implementing Competency Based Education (CBE) in schools, in accordance with the NEP 2020.

He stated that the primary focus of the board was to establish an educational environment that shifts away from mere memorization towards fostering creative, critical, and systems thinking skills among students to tackle 21st-century challenges.

Emanuel reiterated CBSE’s commitment to aligning assessment and evaluation methods with the NEP 2020.

CBSE aims to foster students’ analytical abilities and equip them for 21st-century challenges by adjusting the examination format to include a greater number of competency-based questions.
