The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has approved the introduction of Basic Mathematics option for the class 10 board examinations from 2020 onwards. Students, who find their regular/standard mathematics tough, can opt for simple mathematics.
Based on the feedback received by the board over the years the option of Basic Mathematics has been provided and that proved to be a success as 50 percent of the students of class 10 have opted for Basic Mathematics. Teachers from various schools say that this trend among the students and parents is catching up and they are requesting them to let them take the Basic Mathematics exam instead of Standard Mathematics.
A senior school teacher from Delhi NCR says, “Students opting out of standard mathematics subjects are increasing by the day.” The option has let the students who do not want to continue with standard mathematics in class 11 and 12 to opt-out of it. The teacher also pointed out that choosing Basic Mathematics will make sure that the students have a higher aggregate in the board examinations.
Even though, the views of teachers differ on this move of having two mathematics papers, some say it will set a wrong lead and others believe that it is a step towards improving the examination standards and there are some teachers who are worried about the idea, as a number of students are opting out of the subject. But, students who want to pursue the standard mathematics in class 11 and 12 can appear for the Standard Mathematics examination in the July Compartment Exam.
