CBSE Issues Revised Guidelines for Schools to Enhance Accessibility for Children with Special Needs

by Praneetha Bandaru

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) released a new circular aimed at improving facilities for Children with Special Needs (CwSN) in schools. This directive revises previous guidelines set out in Circular No. 05/2023, with a focus on optimising accessibility and inclusion in both existing and new schools seeking CBSE affiliation.

Schools must now ensure that ramps, accessible toilets, and elevators meet stringent requirements to facilitate barrier-free access for students with disabilities. Key updates include mandatory ramps for ground floors, specific dimensions for accessible toilets, and enhanced signage and auditory signals for lifts.

Additionally, schools are required to make improvements in pathways, including even and slip-resistant surfaces, and proper handrails at crucial points. New standards for lifts include brightly coloured doors and controls accessible to all students, while toilets must feature non-slip flooring, clear space for wheelchair manoeuvring, and emergency alarms.

The updated provisions reflect an ultimate commitment to inclusivity, aligned with the Rehabilitation of Persons With Disabilities Act 2016 and the National Education Policy. Schools are expected to implement these changes by the next academic session to ensure that students with special needs receive equitable educational opportunities. For further details, schools are advised to review this circular.
