In a major push toward promoting linguistic diversity and cultural integration, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced the launch of Bharatiya Bhasha Camps in all its affiliated schools across India. These language camps will be conducted during the 2025 summer vacations, with the aim of introducing students to India’s 22 scheduled languages.
This initiative is in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasises multilingualism and experiential learning. Through these camps, students will get the opportunity to learn an additional Indian language in an engaging, activity-based environment.
Camp Format and Curriculum
- Each camp will run for 28 hours, designed to fit flexibly into local academic calendars.
- Every camp will cater to 75–100 students per school.
Activities include:
- Vocabulary building and conversational practice
- Role-playing everyday scenarios (e.g., shopping, asking directions)
- Cultural immersion through music, dance, storytelling, and local history
The seven-day module begins with basic greetings and gradually moves to topics like virtual city tours, cuisine, and heritage. The final day will feature student performances, language competitions, and certificate distribution.
Who Will Teach?
Languages will be chosen based on teacher availability and regional relevance. Schools may engage:
- Existing teachers of languages, arts, or music
- Community volunteers with relevant linguistic skills
Learning Resources
By May 20, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) will release a short course and teaching materials in all 22 scheduled languages. These resources will include:
- Online modules
- Audio-visual content from NCERT, SCERTs, and DIETs
- Broadcast support via PM-eVidya channels
NCERT will act as the central coordinating body, while State Education Departments, SCERTs, and DIETs will manage the programme regionally.
Long-Term Vision
Schools are encouraged to form Bharatiya Bhasha Clubs for ongoing language practice throughout the year. Participating schools will be required to submit online reports with photographs documenting the camp activities.
This nationwide initiative also supports the ‘Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat’ campaign, aiming to preserve India’s linguistic heritage and promote national unity through language education.
