CBSE to trim syllabus to Deal with COVID-19 Lockdown

by

The Central Board for Secondary Education (CBSE) is likely to reduce curriculum load for the next academic session for classes VI-XII in view of the COVID-19 disruption. The loss of teaching time during lockdown is a major reason for the cutback. Ramesh Pokhriyal, HRD Minister, has conveyed CBSE’s instruction to truncate the syllabus for next year.

Repercussions of countrywide lockdown will be felt in the academic year 20-21. XII students have already lost one and half months of school to COVID-19 countrywide school shutdown, commenced on March 16.

Senior teachers were asked by CBSE officials to share ideas on the new structure via webinar. CBSE is planning the reshaped syllabus in collaboration with NCERT. CBSE stakeholders are actively contributing to re-imagining the academic calendar.

The new calendar by NCERT covers classes I-XII and provides links to audiobooks, visuals and radio programmes for advanced learning. Most of the activities have been done away with to keep students glued to academic classes. The calendar is replete with interesting and alternative ways through which students can stay tuned to academic leaning. The trimmed syllabus will ensure the continuum of learning even amidst the unprecedented crisis scenario.

Teachers have been also directed to include visual tools, technology, and social media to make e-learning a culmination of fun and knowledge.

To keep children from experiencing boredom or monotone, CBSE has launched free live fitness classes with the aim of cultivating “a sustainable and active lifestyle right from their younger days.” Fit India Mission and CBSE have partnered in designing the content of these classes.

Commenting on the situation, a CBSE official commented, “NCERT has come out with revised activities calendar for 1-8, CBSE is assessing the situation and loss of time to rationalise syllabus for classes 9-12 and inform in due course of time.”

In all probability, JEE, too, is likely to be held on June according to HRD Minister
