In a landmark move aimed at transforming India’s education system, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced a significant reform—starting from 2026, Class X students will have the opportunity to take their board examinations twice a year. Additionally, CBSE is set to introduce a Global Curriculum for its 260 affiliated international schools from the 2026-27 academic session.
This decision follows extensive discussions led by the Ministry of Education, involving key stakeholders, including CBSE, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS), and Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS). Draft proposals for these changes will be open for public consultation.
Biannual Board Exams: A Stress-Free Alternative
Aligning with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the introduction of biannual board examinations aims to reduce the pressure of high-stakes testing. Students will be allowed to appear for the exams twice a year and retain their best score, offering them greater flexibility and a stress-free evaluation process.
The revised system prioritises competency-based assessments over rote memorisation, encouraging conceptual understanding and skill development. This progressive shift is designed to accommodate students facing exam-related stress or unforeseen challenges, making the system more inclusive.
To support this transition, CBSE will also implement teacher training programmes, ensuring educators are well-equipped to handle the new assessment structure.
CBSE Global Curriculum: Merging Indian and International Standards
Another major reform is the introduction of the CBSE Global Curriculum, tailored for international schools affiliated with the board. This new curriculum will integrate core Indian subjects while aligning with global educational standards, offering students a balanced academic foundation.
These sweeping changes signal a major shift towards a more holistic, student-friendly, and inclusive education system, fostering an environment that nurtures learning beyond examinations.
