CBSE’s twice a year exam pattern to begin from the 2025-26 academic session

by

The Ministry of Education has hinted that the CBSE is considering holding board exams twice a year from the 2025-26 academic session. This change aims to alleviate stress and provide more opportunities to students. Although a semester system is not currently planned, the ministry’s primary concern is to assess the practicality of biannual board exams, instructing the CBSE to plan the necessary logistics for twice-yearly exams.

The ministry has instructed the board to seek feedback from school principals regarding the possibility of conducting CBSE board exams twice a year.

On August 23, 2023, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan announced the completion of the new curriculum framework (NCF), aligned with the National Education Policy 2020. The framework includes several changes to the CBSE curriculum, including the recommendation for biannual board exams.

The framework stated that board exams will be offered at least twice a year to ensure students have enough time and opportunity to perform well. Students can then appear for a board exam in subjects they have completed and feel ready for, and they will be able to retain for their best score.

Further, on February 24, 2024, Pradhan declared that starting in the 2025-26 academic year, students will have the opportunity to sit for board exams twice a year.
