Centenary celebrations at DU from May 1

Delhi University is gearing up to celebrate its centenary as it has already prepared for a plethora of programmes in a year long event.

It has already sanctioned the construction of a new hostel, the introduction of various courses in engineering and many other programmes, the vice chancellor of DU, Mr Yogesh Singh has stated.

Apart from these, it has also planned to introduce ‘centenary chance’, a programme under which students who left their studies unfinished can complete their education. “Many many students could not complete their degrees. The university has decided to give them two chances. We have called them a centenary chance to complete their studies. They can register on the University portal,” the VC was quoted in a press conference. Other than this, it also plans to adopt a centenary village and also plans to take up a social welfare oriented goal.

The centenary celebrations will begin from May 1, and will end on May 1 next year. It has allocated a fund of ten crores to mark the occasion and also plans to invest in a coffee table book to mark the occasion. The VC also has plans to release a commemorative stamp and coin.

“We have prepared a road map for the celebration of the centenary of DU. As a part of it, we will be launching a commemorative coin and stamp. The year-long activities have been planned including the adoption of a centenary village with achievable and tangible social welfare-oriented goals, health awareness checkup and blood donation camps, among others,” he stated.

The VC mentioned how they want to widen the management and economic courses by starting new programmes in Btech and UG and PG years.

“The university will also begin certificate and diploma courses in job-ready courses. For the first time, technical courses shall be started in the university and BTech in three streams including CSE, EC and EE will be introduced. UG and PG courses in Management and Economics will also be introduced in the School of Open Learning (SOL),” the vice chancellor of DU quoted.

The VC also informed that there will be a new building for the faculty of technology and academic and administrative blocks in the Institute of Eminence (IoE) building under the centenary infrastructure creation programme.

He also mentioned that two new hostels of 800-1000 beds each will come up for the rising number of outstation students. The centenary celebrations will also see several distinguished alumni, teaching and non teaching staff, unsung heroes of the university, and retired staff members being felicitated.

Apart from these, the university will also plant hundred trees at hundred locations, and a documentary on the DU will also be made.
