Effective communication and a strong support system is the key for students with learning differences. The growing virtual learning space has made it difficult for families and schools to reduce the communication gap accentuated by the pandemic. The two crucial players of the support network – teachers and parents must build a good plan of action for successful communication.
According to a survey, industry experts, parents and academicians came forward who were dedicated to the cause of aiding children with learning differences, provided and shared their insights. However, both teachers and parents have their own shares of challenges and confusions to immerse themselves in the learning process of their children like when and how to start a dialogue or what if they are being judged as a parent. Here are some strategies through which both the players can support these students.
Here is what the survey threw up.
Be equal participants
Involve parents in the learning process and give them equal space in knowing every aspect of their child’s education. The more they play an active part, the more they have confidence in the system.
Highlight the students’ strengths
Put the spotlight on child’s achievements, their progress so far before delving into their gray areas. Many experts stated that highlighting students’ growth is a good technique to ensure parents that you are concerned about their child’s academic journey.
Be true to yourself
It is applicable for both the participants to be their true selves, i.e., allow each other to know better and make each other feel comfortable for fruitful communication. Be authentic and genuine to the problems.
Open dialogue matters
Both parents and teachers should exercise immense patience. Both the players must learn from each other as they know their child best. There should be open conversation between the parties so that a student feels comfortable approaching anyone of them with more ease. Better understanding between parents and teachers is essential in the learning process.
Flexibility and adaptability in communication styles
Communication techniques and strategies might vary from family to family. Some may prefer to respond via email, while other families might consider receiving texts or phone calls. Adjust and adapt to the best as per each family’s requirements.
Sharing personal anecdotes help
Giving short examples from personal life help parents to connect more easily. One can incorporate short anecdotes and personal experiences of students from their own life to develop a bond with parents.
