Communicator & Cartoonist par excellence

On cartooning over dentistry

I am a trained dentist but the pull of cartooning was too strong. After dabbling in an animation firm for some time, I realised rather than just imposing information, there should be engagement and interaction and a cartoon can do that. A creative approach to communication to tell facts on wildlife and conservation (topics close to my heart) with a tinge of humour would do and that is how ‘Green Humour’ happened.

On the power of cartooning

Cartoons have a unique charm and can bring a smile on one’s face even if the issue is serious. For instance, I deal with ‘Green Humour’ which is essentially on issues related to all things green such as loss of wildlife, environmental conservation, loss of habitat, human-animal conflict, government policies that impact the environment, discovery of new species, endangered animals et.al

Cartoons can tickle one’s bone and also awaken them to issues that need engagement.

On the column ‘Green Humour’

Green Humour cartoon strips provide a humourous take on issues impacting the environment. For instance-the latest felling of trees in 100 acres in Kancha Gachibowli area near the University of Hyderabad. The cartoons were published in The Hindu newspaper and garnered a lot of attention.

Communicating scientific facts

As a science communicator and cartoonist, it is my duty to spell out facts, demystify information and debunk myths through cartoons in a satirical manner. I work with scientists and on ecological projects.

For example: Many believed that whales used to ram into stationary boats in the coast of Spain as a revenge attack but the fact is it is their playful nature. Scientists agree that killer whales learn hunting techniques through play.

How can school students benefit by cartooning?

In several ways. The possibilities are immense. Social Studies teachers can assign projects by taking them on bird watching treks and the observations can be put on paper.

Workshops on cartooning would help. I myself have done several workshops even in far flung Arunachal Pradesh for young kids.

It helps kids to think, read, explore and know about environmental issues.

Cartooning as a career

It is a long and arduous journey. I started 14 years ago to reach where I am. If one is passionate in what one does, success is bound to come by.  More importantly, it is a matter of calling and following your heart. It is important to be truthful to yourself first and dive deep with utmost sincerity.

When I decided to take the plunge into cartooning full-time, I first worked in an animation form for three years to sustain myself and then quit.
