As temperatures continue to soar across India, several state governments have taken precautionary measures to safeguard students from the ongoing heatwave. In response to alerts issued by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD)—including an orange alert for eight states and a yellow alert for several others—district administrations have directed schools to modify their operating hours.

This step aims to minimize students’ exposure to extreme heat during peak hours. Some states have also declared early summer vacations.

States That Have Announced Changes:

Madhya Pradesh
Authorities have revised school timings to avoid exposing children to the intense afternoon heat. New timings generally shift classes to early morning hours.

Maharashtra
Districts experiencing high temperatures have asked schools to adjust their schedules or close early to ensure student safety.

Odisha
The state government has not only changed school hours but is also monitoring the situation for potential early closures if the heatwave intensifies.

Delhi
With rising temperatures in the capital, schools have been advised to either advance their opening hours or implement shorter school days.

Telangana
The state has declared summer holidays from April 24 to June 11, giving students an early break from the sweltering heat.

Additional states are expected to follow suit if current conditions persist. Authorities have urged schools to ensure proper hydration and ventilation for students attending classes in person.
