In 2021, Delhi schools observed student learning outcomes varying from 30 to 50 percent across all subjects for classes 3 to 10, as disclosed in a recent Economic Survey of the city. Despite these percentages, the performance exceeded the national average in various classes, underscoring noteworthy educational accomplishments in the region.

Finance Minister Atishi presented these Economic Survey findings during a session of the Delhi Assembly, held on 1st of March, 2024, offering insights into the academic scenario within the capital’s education sector. According to the Economic Survey of Delhi for the 2023-24 period, there were differences in student proficiency levels across subjects in the capital. English proficiency stood out as the highest, fluctuating between 52 and 58 percent, while Mathematics displayed the lowest proficiency, ranging from 35 to 47 percent across various classes.

The survey referred to data from diverse sources, such as the State Budget Analysis Report by RBI, UDISE 2021-22, National Achievement Survey 2021, and reports from the Directorate of Education and the Directorate of Technical Education.

Since 2021, there has been a decrease in the pass percentage of students at the senior and senior secondary levels in Delhi government schools.

The survey highlighted a reduction in the enrollment capacity for technical and professional courses in state-run colleges and universities in the city for the academic year 2023-24 compared to the previous year.

As per the data, the overall capacity for these courses slightly decreased from 20,069 in 2022-23 to 19,293 in 2023-24. Moreover, several colleges and universities did not witness an increase in student intake, and the number of such institutions has remained unchanged since 2021-22.

The data reveals that there are currently 18,214 students enrolled in technical institutes operated by the state government. Furthermore, the city boasts a 48 percent representation of higher educational institutions categorized as professional educational institutions.

In contrast, the data also indicates a growth in the number of startups in the city, reaching 274 as of November 2023, up from 156 during the corresponding period in 2022.

Furthermore, nearly all government schools in the city are equipped with facilities like playgrounds, restrooms, potable water, electricity, and computer resources.

The data revealed that in the fiscal year 2023-24, the Delhi government took the lead by allocating almost 21 percent of its budget to the education sector, surpassing other states.
