A directive has been issued to all teachers in government schools to avoid wearing fashionable clothes while on duty by the Himachal Pradesh authorities. To check the incidents of sexual abuse the directive was issued. The government is also contemplating to invoke a dress code in higher secondary schools for the teachers.
Suresh Bhardwaj Education Minister said teachers of a government higher secondary school in Solan have a dress code. “Before implementing the dress code, we will hold talks with teachers soon.” He also said that if other schools also follow this practice there is no harm.
The purpose of the dress code is mainly to avoid wearing “short and tight clothes” as said by the officials. They have said that this initiative will help to check incidents of sexual abuse involving teachers in educational institutions.
Amarjeet Sharma Higher Education Director said, “If teachers adopt a simple living, the students will definitely follow him or her.” There is a proposal for formal trousers & shirts for the male teachers, and there will be either a saree or a salwar suit and no leggings or jeans for the female teachers.
