Every 40 Seconds one suicide is reported | World Suicide Prevention Day

World Suicide Prevention Day

The World Health Organization’s estimation states, “Over 800,000 people die by suicide each year – that’s one person every 40 seconds.”

Collaborating with the International Association for Suicide Prevention and World Federation of Mental Health (WFMH) in the year 2003, World Health Organization started observing 10th September as the World Suicide Prevention Day.

Scaring survey statistics of 2012 has revealed the fact of losing potential youth nation-wide due to stress, exhaustion, living condition, lack of opportunities, unemployment, etc. According to the survey results, India has been ranked with the highest number of suicides across the world which is about half a million! There are around 5 crores of people suffering from depression today. Highest in the age group of 15-30 years, the suicide rate is highest among the youth in the country.

“Every hour one student commits suicide in the country and 40,000 have killed themselves in the last five years,” states National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).

Focusing on mental health is a need of the hour. The important step that we need to take is to come together as a society and prevent the occurrence of such stories. The theme for World Suicide Prevention Day 2018 is ‘Working Together to Prevent Suicide’. As the part of a global society, it is important to work together in empowering the people going through a tough phase in their lives. The organizations are expecting us to support them in removing the idea of suicides from the roots.
