International Women’s Day, celebrated on March 8, honors the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women worldwide. This day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. The theme for 2024 is ‘ Invest in women: Accelerate progress’. In recognition of this important occasion, Brainfeed will be highlighting diverse perspectives and insights from women leaders in the education domain.

In this context, we are pleased to present an article below by Ms. Ramya Uday, Principal, Vels Vidyashram, Thalambur,  Chennai.

The most significant aspect of investing in women is the education we receive, or more precisely, the education we absorb, which fosters independence, strength, and confidence, empowering us to shape a brighter future for ourselves and the society we inhabit.

‘Invest in women – Accelerate progress’, can’t be phrased better. In the realm of education, where countless resources facilitate learning and skill development, the emergence of women as educational leaders requires dedication, time, and a willingness to adapt to trends in the field. It also necessitates a proactive mindset to engage with Generation Z learners and navigate the diverse parent community effectively.

I did have the interest and opportunity to learn Martial arts like Karate & Silambam during my school and college days, with a well-balanced academic discipline. Being an independent girl and woman, I always moved ahead with inquisitiveness to execute the work in innovative and in rarely approached ways. I started my career in the field of education at the age of 19 as a part-time trainer of martial arts (Karate) in schools and as a remedial tutor which made me develop a connection with students and the school community at an early stage in my career. My interest in the subject of Biology made me earn UG, PG & B. Ed in Zoology. My passion for multidisciplinary learning took me forward with a Master’s in Hindi and a Postgraduate Diploma in Computer Applications from a Government Institute.

My love for the human mind further encouraged me to pursue a Master’s in Psychology. Parallel to my years of learning, my connection with students and teachers has fostered a robust bond with the field of education. Starting from KG to Primary as a teacher, progressing to Middle, Secondary, and Senior Secondary levels, and being promoted over the years to positions such as Head of the Department, Coordinator, Senior Coordinator, Academic Coordinator, and Vice Principal in various organizations, I now serve as Principal of Vels Vidyashram Senior Secondary School, Thalambur, Chennai. This journey continues, adorned with cherished memories created alongside students and teachers.

I firmly believe that every woman who achieves success and those striving towards it share one common trait: perspective. It’s this perspective that propels us forward through challenges, even when society views us with prejudice. As I move forward, I continually adjust my shoes, ensuring that I take each step wisely, guided by the experience and mentorship of senior leaders. Of course, not every woman’s journey unfolds like Cinderella’s, a tale of chance and choice.

Nevertheless, society still has a long way to go in understanding the hurdles women face in striking a work-life balance and in attaining freedom and time for education. I perceive everything around me as a medium for learning and a tool for experiencing. Education and knowledge know no end. Today’s women should adopt a 360º approach, embracing a broader perspective toward prospective and progressive growth mindsets. This Women’s Day, the true essence of investing in education stands firm, fostering knowledge and wisdom with equality and equity, devoid of sympathy and empathy. Every woman is born with the right to learn, live, and leave a legacy.
