Foster a love for learning: Sreenivasa Rao

Sreenivasa Rao, Director, Bachpan and Academic Heights Public School, Hyderabad shares his thoughts on the changing educational landscape

How do you see school education transforming?
School education in India has evolved significantly since the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The focus has shifted towards nurturing well-rounded individuals with critical thinking, problem-solving, and creative skills, moving away from rote memorisation.
As changes are happening, at Bachpan too we foster a lifelong love for learning by encouraging hands-on experiences, peer-mediated problem-solving, which not only enhance learning but also build strong relationships and address behavioural challenges.

What fundamental changes are needed in the current education system to make it more future-ready?
The primary purpose of education is to apply knowledge for the betterment of society. Theoretical understanding without practical application is futile. As Albert Einstein said, “Education is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think.” The education system must prioritise the application of knowledge over mere theory. Equal emphasis should be placed on academics, sports, and soft skills. Co-curricular activities boost confidence, enhance student experiences, and develop skills such as leadership, sportsmanship, teamwork, and critical thinking. These are essential for holistic personality development and preparing students for real-world challenges.

How do you see the role of schools evolving in the next 10–15 years?
Schools are likely to adopt personalised, technology-driven learning, prioritizing skills over rote memorisation. Artificial intelligence (AI) will play a pivotal role in customising education to individual needs. Schools must foster creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurial thinking.

What are your thoughts on the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020? How is your institution adapting to it?
We align with this vision by promoting holistic development through diverse co-scholastic activities. We integrate technology, such as augmented and virtual reality, to make learning engaging and interactive. Our focus is on creating an enriching educational experience that prepares students for future challenges while fostering creativity and critical thinking.

What innovative teaching-learning methods have you implemented in Bachpan?
Programmes like Edu-Carnival, inter-school competitions, house debates, sports days, and cultural activities boost self-esteem and foster self-reliance, making learning engaging and impactful.
One of our most impactful initiatives is the Edu-Carnival, a programme that blends academic learning with fun and creativity. This initiative has inspired both students and teachers to think innovatively, fostering creativity and critical thinking while strengthening the school community.
Events such as field trips, Edu-Carnival, inter-school competitions, and AHPS Mega Competitions offer first-hand exposure to real-world applications, enhancing both theoretical and practical skills.

If you had the opportunity to redesign the education system, what would be your top three priorities?
My top three priorities would be: Fostering a love for learning and critical thinking, prioritising personalised and inclusive education and equipping students with practical skills to navigate future challenges.
