The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has bagged the Swachhata Excellence award by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. Hyderabad is the only city among metro cities with population over 10 lakh to win this award. Some awareness programmes like engaging community-based organizations (Self-help groups) for spreading awareness about solid waste management, capping Jawahar Nagar landfill site and introducing 2500 Swachh auto tipper in place of tricycles upped the chances of the city’s win.
Environmentalist K Purushottam Reddy said, “The city bagging the award reflects the pathetic sanitation standards in other cities. Yet, sanitation in the city needs to be improved and capping of dumpyard should be done scientifically as per the solid waste management rules.”
