In a recent order, Chandigarh Department of Education has announced for exemption of tuition fees for 24,500 students studying in classes IX and X in government schools of Chandigarh. Fee from academic sessions April to September has been waived off to support growth of education and learning amidst the pandemic.
In this regard, a letter was issued on Friday highlighting the details, “In view of the present situation due to COVID-19 and the economical background of the parents of students studying in government schools of UT, Chandigarh, Education Department Chandigarh Administration has decided to waive off annual and monthly funds of class IX and X students studying in government schools for the first six months of academic session 2020-21 i.e. from April-2020 to September-2020 as one-time measure. Around 24500 students of class IX and X studying in govt. schools will be beneficiary of this decision. Due to this decision, Department will bear an expenditure of Rs 1.70 Crore.”
Under The Right to Education Act, students of government schools are given free of cost education till VIII along with midday meals, funds for notebooks and seasonal school uniforms.
Chandigarh has asked schools to remain shut till August 15 as officials are probing into feasible options such as hybrid schooling which means students will be attending schools two to three days a week.
Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP) has found that 20 percent of asymptomatic cases had a high risk of spreading the novel coronavirus infections once the schools reopen.
