HKUST Launches Groundbreaking AI Initiative to Transform English Education in Hong Kong

by Ranjith Subeditor

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) unveiled a transformative education technology initiative at the Learning League 2025 Opening Ceremony, set to revolutionise English education for Hong Kong’s secondary school students. With a generous HK$30 million grant from the Quality Education Fund (QEF), this three-year project aims to develop an advanced AI-powered English assessment and learning system, offered free of charge to all secondary school students in the city.

Jointly spearheaded by the HKUST Centre for Language Education, the HKUST Academy of Interdisciplinary Studies, and Trumptech, a leading education technology firm, the initiative promotes both “education equity” and “education equality”. The project ensures students from diverse backgrounds can access state-of-the-art resources and tools for mastering English.

The Global English AI-assisted Virtual Reality Learning System (GAVIS) combines cutting-edge technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Virtual Reality (VR). This system immerses students in real-world scenarios, enabling them to practise and apply English in varied contexts. AI-powered evaluations provide personalised feedback, while VR-based modules enhance experiential learning, bridging the gap between theory and application.

The programme’s initial phase will pilot in participating schools during this academic year, aligning with the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE). Future phases will expand to include international English exams and interview preparation.

In collaboration with the Hong Kong Sun Lions Club, HKUST will also launch the University Teaching Opportunity Programme, a six-month outreach initiative where university students will mentor secondary learners, fostering community engagement and service learning.

Esteemed global experts, including Prof. LI Wei from University College London and Prof. Heath ROSE from the University of Oxford, support the initiative as honorary academic advisors.

HKUST continues to uphold its commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and social impact, solidifying its position as a global leader in education.
