IB to be introduced in Andhra Pradesh schools

by

In a continued effort to narrow the educational divide between affluent and underprivileged students, the Jagan-led state government is introducing international education, specifically the International Baccalaureate (IB), to students in government schools. Going forward, IB will be integrated into the state council of educational research and training (SCERT).

Officials emphasized that the gradual adoption of the IB system of education represents a significant advancement in Andhra Pradesh’s endeavor to equip its students for global competition and success. They declared that this initiative is unparalleled in the country, with the international standard IB becoming an integral part of SCERT.

The introduction of IB will be carried out in a systematic and phased manner, progressing class by class. As part of the IB program, teacher capacity building and training are scheduled for 2024-25, and the commencement of Class I studies in the IB system is planned for June 2025. In the academic year 2025-26, the teaching approach for Class II within the IB system will persist, incorporating one additional class each subsequent year.

By 2034-35, students up to Class 10 will have access to the IB system of education. Joint certification from both IB and the state board is scheduled for April 2035. Subsequently, in the academic year 2036-37, the IB system will extend its offerings to students in Class 12, with joint certification from IB and the state board set for April 2037.

The YSRC government has been actively preparing students for the IB system of education since 2019, aligning with its commitment to mold children into global citizens. As part of this initiative, transformative changes are being implemented in the education system, according to officials. They also explained that English has been adopted as the medium of instruction from the primary level, and the transition from CBSE to IB introduced the concept of subject teachers starting from Class III. To meet IB standards, infrastructure development and school upgrades are carried out through Nadu-Nedu. This program includes the installation of 62,000 IFPs in every classroom from Class VI and above to enhance digital education. Additionally, 45,000 smart TVs are installed in schools with Class I to Class V, supporting English Labs.
