With the objective of promoting scientific curiosity and mathematical skills among students in Assam, the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati partnered with Samagra Shiksha Assam, under the Rashtriya Avishkar Abhiyan, to host a large-scale Science and Maths Olympiad, one of India’s largest. Over 1.14 lakh students from 3,828 schools across the state participated in this event, aimed at nurturing talent, fostering critical thinking, and improving problem-solving abilities in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) disciplines.
According to Prof. Parameswar K. Iyer, Dean PRBR at IIT Guwahati, the institute has been closely collaborating with the education department of Assam to bolster STEM activities throughout the state, through vibrant events like Olympiads.
The Olympiad consisted of two phases. First, an OMR-based physical pen-paper test for secondary school students across Assam was conducted, to assess their understanding and application of scientific and mathematical concepts; followed by a state-level round. The district-level test occurred on March 18, 2024.
Two top performers from each district were selected for the final round of the Olympiad at IIT Guwahati. This round provided finalists with an opportunity to interact with peers from across the state. Held on March 30, 2024, the final round involved 62 participants (32 female and 30 male) from classes 9th and 10th. Three state champions emerged from these 62 final participants. The 1st Prize was awarded to Chandan Kaushik Saikia from Namdeuri High School, Jorhat, the 2nd Prize was awarded to Jnanarun Hazarika from Dhalasatra High School, Jorhat and the 3rd Prize went to Arjun Karki from Hawaipur High School, West Karbianglong.
In his congratulatory message to the Olympiad winners, Prof. Rajeev Ahuja, Officiating Director at IIT Guwahati, expressed the institute’s delight in organizing the event. He affirmed IIT Guwahati’s commitment to enriching STEM education in Assam and the northeast region, engaging with all education stakeholders to promote STEM-related activities.
