On the occasion of International Women’s Day, Brainfeed took the opportunity to recognize the efforts of twenty exceptional women leaders in the field of education. We featured them in our cover story “Women Edupreneurs” of March 2023 edition of the Brainfeed Magazine. These women leaders focused and strived for creating a positive ecosystem at their workplace that helped other women in contributing to their fullest and ushering in the much needed change. Each one of these women educational entrepreneurs shared what it took them to successfully complete their entrepreneurial journey during which they have explored and found new identities for themselves and other women working with them.
Inclusive education means equal opportunities to learn, regardless of background, ability or learning style. Universal Design for Learning (UDL) uses inclusive tools that are technology based and other resources used that make learning environments more accessible and equitable for learners with diverse needs. The goal of using inclusive tools is to remove barriers to learning and create a more inclusive and supportive learning environment for all learners.
Inclusive education recognises diversity and encompasses different abilities, interests, and learning needs. It creates a welcoming classroom culture bereft of bias and respect for teachers. It stresses on individualized support by involving assistive technologies, providing additional resources, or adapting learning materials to suit different learning styles.
The importance of collaboration among teachers, learners, and families accessibility to learning environments and materials and technologies is paramount.
By integrating these principles of inclusive education into Universal Design for Learning, educators can create a learning environment that is accessible, equitable, and inclusive for all learners, regardless of their backgrounds, abilities, or learning preferences.
Inclusive education has several benefits for women’s learning and income as it improves access to education for women from marginalized communities, increased employment opportunities, acquiring new skills and knowledge, increased employment opportunities and financial stability, which can improve their standard of living and overall well-being of the family.
Women who feel valued and supported in their education are more likely to be confident and motivated learners, which can positively impact their future success.
Promoting gender equity as an inclusive tool
Promoting gender equity as an inclusive tool in education has numerous benefits for individuals and society as it leads to increased enrolment and graduation rates for girls and women, which in turn can help to close gender-based achievement gaps. It also promotes gender-sensitive curricula, better engagement, participation, helping to improve student achievement and success.
By promoting gender equity in education, schools can support teachers in adopting gender-responsive pedagogical practices, which can help to ensure that all students receive quality and equitable education, regardless of gender and address gender-based violence and harassment.
Inclusive education will have a lasting positive impact on not only an individual, but also the family and the community as a whole.
