Indian students have achieved significant success at the 54th International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) and the 56th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) 2024, securing a total of six medals. These prestigious events took place from July 21 to July 29 in Isfahan, Iran, and from July 21 to July 30 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
In the IChO, the Indian team achieved:
- Devesh (Gold) – Jalgaon, Maharashtra
- Avaneesh (Silver) – Kota, Rajasthan
- Harshin (Silver) – Hyderabad, Telangana
- Kashyap (Bronze) – Mumbai, Maharashtra
The competition consisted of theoretical and experimental components, covering topics such as semiconducting metal oxides and antibiotic synthesis. The experimental section included thin-layer chromatography and mass-based titrations.
At the IPhO, Indian participants earned two gold and three silver medals. The medalists are:
- Rhythm Kedia (Gold) – Raipur, Chhattisgarh
- Ved Lahoti (Gold) – Indore, Madhya Pradesh
- Akarsh Raj Sahay (Silver) – Nagpur, Maharashtra
- Bhavya Tiwari (Silver) – Noida, Uttar Pradesh
- Jaiveer Singh (Silver) – Kota, Rajasthan
India was ranked fourth overall, sharing the position with Vietnam, while China, Russia, and Romania took the top three spots respectively. The Olympiad featured theoretical and experimental challenges, including topics on global warming, ion trapping, and binary star dynamics. A total of 193 students from 43 countries participated, with medals distributed as 18 gold, 35 silver, and 53 bronze. The Indian teams were guided by esteemed educators, with Professor Deepak Garg and Dr. Shirish Pathare leading the IPhO team, and Professor Gulshanara Shaikh and Dr. Shraeddha Tiwari heading the IChO delegation.
