Indian EdTech Sector Transforming Education Accessibility and Bridging Divides

by Ranjith Subeditor

The Indian EdTech sector is playing a pivotal role in bridging geographical divides and making quality education accessible to millions, as highlighted in the recently released report, Impact Study of EdTech in India: Driving Innovation & Creating Opportunities. Jointly produced by the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) and Grant Thornton Bharat, with support from Leadsquared and Infinity Learn, the report was unveiled at the India Digital Summit (IDS).

According to the study, 98% of teachers and 69% of parents acknowledge EdTech’s role in overcoming geographical barriers. The sector has facilitated access to high-quality educational resources, including video lectures, interactive modules, and virtual classrooms, ensuring that students across diverse regions can access quality learning regardless of location. Additionally, 94% of students and 84% of teachers find EdTech content engaging, highlighting its success in bridging gaps between academic knowledge and industry requirements to foster employability.

The report notes that 85% of students attribute improved learning outcomes to EdTech, with 87% recognising its contribution to real-world skills such as coding and artificial intelligence. Furthermore, 61% of students value the availability of content in regional languages, underlining its inclusivity. However, challenges like connectivity issues and insufficient accommodations for special needs learners remain, presenting opportunities for innovation.

Aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, EdTech platforms have embraced personalised, multidisciplinary learning models. Recommendations for stakeholders include revising the 18% GST on EdTech services to improve affordability, promoting public-private partnerships, and prioritising last-mile solutions such as offline access and regional language content. The report emphasises the importance of ethical technology use and enhanced cybersecurity to ensure sustainable growth.

Prateek Maheshwari, Co-Founder of PhysicsWallah, highlighted the sector’s potential in addressing declining school enrolments, stating, “EdTech can remove physical barriers to education and bring learning to remote corners of India.” Echoing this sentiment, Ujjwal Singh, CEO of Infinity Learn, expressed commitment to providing hybrid learning models that ensure quality, outcome-based education without relocation.

The report’s insights underscore the transformative power of EdTech in creating an equitable and future-ready education system, fostering a skilled and empowered workforce.
