Indian Education Ministry Encourages State Authorities to Incorporate Millet-Based Meals in School Cafeterias

by admin

The Ministry of Education in India has called upon all states and union territories to include millet-based meals in school canteens, aiming to promote healthy eating habits and raise awareness about millet. This initiative is part of the ongoing International Year of Millets, a global campaign highlighting the nutritional advantages of these coarse grains.

The ministry had previously requested all states and union territories to share a month-wise plan of millet-related activities but expressed disappointment as the information is still pending. A reminder has been sent, urging prompt action from the concerned officials.

India proposed and the United Nations declared 2023 as the International Year of Millets. Since then, India has been committed to popularizing these nutritious grains known for their micronutrient content and resilience.

Despite repeated requests, some states have failed to update the ministry about their efforts and activities related to the millet year. To address this, the ministry has once again reached out to the states, emphasizing the importance of cooperation for the success of the millet year.

Additionally, the ministry has recommended that states follow a millet-based recipe book prepared by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India. Furthermore, last year, the ministry instructed all states to incorporate millet into the free midday meal menus for students in government and government-aided schools up to Class 8. The aim was to increase awareness among students and parents about millet’s benefits in terms of food security and nutrition.
