Many countries are showing their interest for Indian universities to establish their campuses abroad

India looks forward to establish its universities abroad. The possible locations for establishing the offshore Indian campuses include Vietnam, Thailand and some African and Gulf countries.  The regulations for setting up these campuses are ready and will be released in the coming month.

A number of countries are ready to offer the required infrastructures for Indian universities which seek to establish their campuses abroad. Along with this, UGC will assist the universities in choosing the countries where they look forward to establish their offshore campuses.

The huge university ecosystem in India comprises of central, state-funded, and private universities which have been outstanding in the education field. UGC steps forward to encourage these universities to set up their offshore campuses abroad and a few countries have come forward offering the required infrastructure for these universities to establish their offshore campuses.

These include countries which have large Indian diaspora, who want Indian universities to set up their offshore campuses and provide education to them.  Furthermore, many African countries have shown interest in hosting Indian universities.

The potential for setting up Indian universities’ offshore campuses in Vietnam, Thailand, and Gulf countries is huge and there are ample amount of opportunities and interest from these countries. But, accordingly, no enabling regulations are framed yet.

IITs have been on request for establishing their campuses on request by Middle-Eastern and South-Asian countries. IIT Madras has been looking for opportunities to establish its offshore campuses in Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Tanzania. IIT Delhi is seeking its establishing opportunities in the United Arab Emirates. Additionally, more IIT campuses are planned to establish their offshore campuses in Egypt, Thailand, Malaysia, and the UK.

IITs are educational institutes of national importance and they function under the IIT council. It has its own rules and regulations according to which it can setup offshore campuses in other countries.  Some IITs are working on this plan already.

In the previous month, the IITs were allowed to establish their campuses abroad by the UGC for the first time.  It also revealed the draught regulations which allowed the universities to control their admission policies, fees schedules, and money repatriation.

The final rules, which will also take the viewpoint of the stakeholders, will be released next month.  The regulation which brings the foreign universities to India is in wide discussion because of the possible advantages it can bring to the Indian students.
