In today’s school education landscape, there is a burgeoning focus on integrating critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and global awareness into curriculum and teaching methodologies. Schools are progressively embracing interdisciplinary projects to cultivate profound learning experiences and equip students for the multifaceted challenges of the 21st century. In this interview, Dr. Priti Shrimal, Principal, Billabong High International School, Vadodara, sheds light on these crucial aspects within her school. Let’s dive in!

Q. How do critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and global awareness influence your school’s curriculum and teaching methods?

At Billabong High International School (BHIS), we integrate values such as critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and global awareness into our curriculum and teaching methods in several ways. For instance, students engage in hands-on experiential learning across subjects, such as field trips to local museums and science centres. They also participate in community service through NGO visits and involvement in Intact Club activities that support social causes.

We foster creativity and public speaking skills through culminating and classroom presentations, where students perform skits with social messages in front of parents, boosting their confidence and overcoming stage fear.

Additionally, we organize monthly themed activities like Autism Awareness Month, Mental Health Month, Pride Month, and Anti-Bullying Month. These events include activities such as poster-making competitions, assemblies, and participation in the Intact Club of Rotract, encouraging students to express creativity and awareness of important societal issues. These immersive experiences not only bring academic concepts to life but also make learning more meaningful and memorable for our students.

Q. Could you describe any interdisciplinary learning projects where students apply their knowledge across subjects and real-world situations?

Interdisciplinary learning initiatives and projects play a crucial role in enabling students to apply their knowledge across different subjects and real-world scenarios, thereby enhancing their understanding and creating connections between diverse areas of study. One prominent example at our school is our STEM sessions (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). These sessions present challenges that demand students to utilize knowledge and skills from multiple disciplines to tackle real-world problems effectively. For instance, our students engage in designing and constructing a sustainable, energy-efficient model home. This project integrates principles from physics, mathematics, engineering, and environmental science, allowing students to grasp how these fields interconnect in practical applications. Through such initiatives, students not only enhance their academic skills but also develop critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and teamwork in a hands-on, collaborative learning environment.

Q. How does your school define and prioritize academic excellence, and what strategies does it employ to uphold high academic standards for students?

Maintaining high academic standards at our school involves a comprehensive approach that engages educators and students alike. Regular assessments are conducted after each chapter to track student progress, enabling teachers to identify areas of difficulty and provide targeted interventions for support. Additionally, subject teachers offer after-school support classes, and remedial sessions are led by a dedicated special educator.

Furthermore, we prioritize ongoing professional development for our teachers. This investment enhances their subject knowledge, instructional techniques, and proficiency with technology. Empowered with these resources, teachers deliver high-quality instruction and continually refine their teaching practices to meet the needs of our students effectively.

Q. What is your interpretation of ’21st-century value and skill-integrated learning,’ and why do you believe it is crucial in contemporary education?

21st-century value and skill-integrated learning” refers to an educational approach emphasizing the development of essential values and skills crucial for success in today’s dynamic world. It involves nurturing curiosity, adaptability, and a mindset of continuous learning among students. This approach not only teaches students what to think but also how to think critically and creatively.

In contemporary society, there is a growing demand for individuals who possess technical expertise alongside strong soft skills like communication, teamwork, and problem-solving. Students need to acquire these competencies to navigate uncertainty and excel in diverse personal, professional, and societal environments. This contrasts with traditional academic methods that primarily focus on imparting knowledge.

Furthermore, this approach instils values such as integrity, empathy, and social responsibility. These values are essential for students to become responsible citizens and ethical leaders in today’s interconnected global landscape. Thus, integrating 21st-century values and skills into education prepares students to thrive and contribute meaningfully to society.

Q. Can you share innovative teaching methods at your school that have improved student learning?

At our school, we have implemented various innovative pedagogical approaches that significantly enhance students’ learning experiences and outcomes. Integration of technology plays a pivotal role, exemplified by the deployment of Smart Boards across all grades to enrich teaching methods.

Additionally, we’ve introduced Social Emotional Learning (SEL), emphasizing skills such as self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship building, and responsible decision-making. SEL is seamlessly integrated into the school day, fostering a positive climate where every student feels safe, supported, and valued.

Furthermore, our curriculum includes global perspectives to broaden students’ understanding of the world and their roles within it. These initiatives collectively contribute to a dynamic educational environment focused on holistic student development.

Q. What future strategies or initiatives does your school aim to implement to enhance learning and ensure students’ holistic development?

Our school is committed to enhancing the learning experience and ensuring holistic development among students through several strategic initiatives. Moving forward, we aim to expand our social-emotional learning (SEL) programs significantly. This entails integrating SEL curriculum and practices throughout the school day, ensuring that students receive comprehensive support for their overall well-being and personal growth.

Furthermore, we are dedicated to fostering a more inclusive and equitable learning environment. Our ongoing efforts include initiatives to ensure that every student feels valued, supported, and empowered to achieve their full potential. This commitment involves continuous enhancements in our educational approach and resources to promote a positive and nurturing school atmosphere.
