On October 15, the Karnataka government informed the Supreme Court that it had withdrawn its notification to conduct board exams for classes 5, 8 & 9 in three rural districts for the current academic year. This announcement came during a hearing of an appeal filed by the Organisation for Unaided Recognised Schools, challenging the Karnataka High Court’s decision from March.
Previously, the Karnataka High Court had allowed the government to conduct board exams for classes 5,8, 9 and 11 for the academic year 2023-24 overturning an earlier single-judge decision that nullified the state’s plan. The court’s intervention was seen as a response to concerns over the government’s October notification to implement exams through the Karnataka State Examination and Assessment Board (KSEAB).
However, the Supreme Court had earlier stayed this high court ruling, pausing the board exams. On October 15, the state’s Solicitor General clarified that errors in marking in the affected districts had led to the notification, which has now been withdrawn. Further hearings on this issue are expected soon.
