by

Kerala is about to introduce its huge AI- training program for approximately 80,000 secondary school teachers.  A three-day event, organized by the Kerala Infrastructure and Technology for Education (KITE), will provide essential AI skills to teachers of Classes 8 to 12. This initiative represents a major advancement in incorporating AI into education and also establishes a national precedent, being the first program of its kind in India. Set to start on May 2, 2024, the program aims to equip teachers with advanced AI skills by August 2024, promising transformative method on teaching techniques and improving student learning outcomes.

The AI training is designed to teach summarisation techniques that simplify complex documents in PDFs, images, and videos, enabling the creation of concise summaries that preserve key information and facilitate the generation of new content using AI tools. The goal is to equip participants with these AI skills by August 2024.

KITE declared that the training will equip teachers with skills for creating and editing visuals customized for different subjects. Teachers will also learn how to convert these visuals into cartoons or paintings and integrate text smoothly with them.

The program will then cover Prompt Engineering and Machine Learning, teaching teachers how to develop precise prompts that are essential for making the most of AI tools. This practical approach will further enhance their understanding of AI programming techniques.

Through data visualization, teachers will learn how AI can be used to create presentations and animations, and to generate and tailor tables, graphs, and charts for specific educational purposes.

Following that, the training will concentrate on assessment techniques, providing teachers with AI-based tools for evaluations. This will help them create a variety of question formats, such as unit tests, thereby enhancing the assessment process.

Each session will include 25 teachers using their laptops and mobile devices. To ensure data privacy while using AI tools, teachers will use G-Suite accounts provided by KITE, which eliminates the need to use personal email IDs and other credentials.

K Anvar Sadath, Chief Executive Officer of KITE said that the training is designed to help teachers tailor learning activities to the needs of individual students and modify resources to accommodate students with disabilities. He also mentioned that 180 Master Trainers from KITE have undergone a detailed one-month AI training to gear up for this initiative.

The training modules for the various sessions have been prepared and are ready to get implemented. Initially, the program targeted Higher Secondary and High School IT coordinators, as well as the little KITEs masters.

Kerala’s extensive AI training initiative for 80,000 secondary school teachers represents a significant step towards modernizing the state’s educational system. Led by KITE, this comprehensive program not only provides teachers with advanced AI skills but also promotes a culture of innovation and inclusivity in classrooms.

By focusing on practical training, data privacy, and tailored learning experiences, the program aims to transform teaching methods and improve educational results for students from varied backgrounds. With 180 trained Master Trainers and carefully designed modules in place, Kerala is ready to establish a standard in AI-enhanced education, setting the stage for a brighter and more inclusive future for its students.
